Frequently Asked Questions
How does this whole process work?
Let me direct you to my handy Website Design Timeline.
How do I get a domain name?
You'll need to use an accredited domain name registrar. Often, your Web hosting company has a relationship with a particular registrar that allows you to purchase your Web hosting account and domain name with one transaction.
I usually recommend GoDaddy.com because they have great prices and they are a large, trust-worthy company. They also offer webhosting. For more help, you can look at my instructions for buying a domain name.
How do I choose a Web Host?
If you will be buying a domain name from GoDaddy.com the easiest thing is to buy webspace with them as well. If you need help with that process I have written instructions to follow.
The fact is that there are so many web hosts available that choosing one can seem daunting. If you anticipate needing extra help in this area or to know the minimum requirements for the site I will build, please let me know on your inquiry form so I can factor that into your estimate.
Do you have any tips on choosing a domain name?
Make sure the name you choose is easy to remember and spell, and isn't too long. Domain names can't exceed 63 characters, including the characters in the top level domain (e.g. .com). Only letters, numbers, and hyphens are allowed.
If you have an established company, you should try to register your company name as your domain. This will make it easier for people who are already familiar with your business to remember your domain name.
Finally, ask other people's opinion of the name(s) you are considering! A name that makes sense to you may be too difficult for other people to remember. Expect that finding a domain name will be a process that takes some serious consideration and frustration. You are almost certain to think of that perfect name only to find it already taken. Choose carefully, this name will be with you for some time.
